Chris Godwin, Buccaneers, Agree to Contract

Prior to his injury, Chris Godwin was in the midst of arguably the best season of his impressive career. Paired with quarterback Baker Mayfield and first-year offensive coordinator Liam Coen, the wide receiver recorded 50 receptions for 576 yards and five touchdowns through the season's first seven games. Unfortunately, Godwin suffered a season-ending ankle injury late in Tampa Bay's 41-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. At the time of his injury, Godwin led the league in receptions and was second in receiving yards.

Chris Godwin originally entered the NFL as a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Penn State product spent the first two years of his career as a promising pass-catcher on a loaded wide receiver depth chart. He finally had his chance to break out in 2019 and made the most of it. Starting and appearing in 14 games, the wide receiver finished the season with 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns while earning the first Pro Bowl selection of his career.

Following that breakout season, Godwin teamed up with superstar quarterback Tom Brady. Playing alongside Mike Evans, Godwin played in 12 games while recording 65 receptions for 840 yards and seven touchdowns. With Brady's help, Godwin and company won Super Bowl 55 in blowout fashion against the Kansas City Chiefs. One year later, Godwin recorded 98 receptions for 1,102 yards and five touchdowns before tearing his ACL late in the season. Despite his injury, the Buccaneers rewarded Godwin with a three-year, $60 million contract.

Since signing his rookie contract, Chris Godwin has appeared in 111 games while making 84 starts. During his time on the field, the Penn State product has recorded 579 receptions for 7,266 yards and 39 touchdowns on 816 targets.

Bredeson, a former fourth-round pick, spent the 2024 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but also played for the Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants.

Ben Bredeson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Agree to Contract

After a disappointing finish to his time with the New York Giants, Ben Bredeson signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2024 offseason. This move paid dividends for the Buccaneers, as the former fourth-round pick started all 17 games for Tampa Bay while helping the team win the NFC South. Unfortunately, their postseason ride came to a premature end after losing a heartbreaker to Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders.

Ben Bredeson originally entered the league as a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Selected by the Baltimore Ravens, the Michigan product didn't do much of anything as a rookie. Appearing in 10 games without making a start, Bredeson finished the season with a 47.4 PFF grade, one of the lowest marks in the league.

The Ravens decided they had seen enough and traded the guard to the New York Giants during the 2021 offseason. Now in a new home, the Michigan product appeared in eight games but only made one start. Following that unremarkable season, he finally showed signs of life in 2022. Appearing in 11 games while making eight starts, Bredeson finished the season with a 57.5 PFF grade, the 53rd-best mark out of 77 eligible players. With his help, the Giants made the playoffs and defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card round.

Ben Bredeson built on his promising 2023 and entered the final year of his contract as New York's starting left guard. Unfortunately, his play took a major step back, as he switched between both guard spots and finished the season with a 42.5 PFF grade, the 75th-best mark out of 79 eligible players.

Lavonte David, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Agree to Contract

Despite his advanced age, Lavonte David remained one of the most reliable players on the Buccaneers defense. A longtime leader, the former second-round pick started all 17 games while recording 5.5 sacks, 122 tackles, nine tackles-for-loss, six quarterback hits, one interception, and a 67.9 PFF grade, the 33rd-best mark out of 83 eligible players. With David's help, Tampa Bay made it to the playoffs but lost their Wild Card matchup to Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders.

Lavonte David originally entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Nebraska product immediately made an impact for the team. Starting in all 16 games, the linebacker finished his inaugural season with 139 tackles, 20 tackles-for-loss, five quarterback hits, two sacks, and one interception. He proved this wasn't a fluke, earning First-Team All-Pro honors in 2013 and making the Pro Bowl in 2015.

After missing the playoffs every year for his first eight seasons, David finally had a chance to compete for the playoffs when superstar quarterback Tom Brady joined the team in 2020. Starting in all 16 games, David anchored a strong Buccaneers defense as they went on a championship run. Earning Second-Team All-Pro honors, David finished the season with 117 tackles, 12 tackles-for-loss, three quarterback hits, and one interception. David and the Buccaneers have made the playoffs in each of the past five seasons, three times with Brady and twice with former first-overall pick Baker Mayfield.

Since signing his rookie contract, Lavonte David has started and played in 198 games. While on the field, the linebacker has recorded 39 sacks, 1,602 tackles, 169 tackles-for-loss, and 73 quarterback hits.

Buccaneers Expected To Move On From Super Bowl Champion https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/02/buccaneers-expected-to-move-on-from-super-bowl-champion-free-agent-jordan-whitehead/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/02/buccaneers-expected-to-move-on-from-super-bowl-champion-free-agent-jordan-whitehead/#respond Sun, 02 Mar 2025 20:30:17 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=220205 The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will move on from free agent safety Jordan Whitehead when the new league year begins. According to the breaking news, the Buccaneers are releasing Whitehead since he's a cap casualty. Last offseason, it was all about reunion affairs but the season didn't go as planned for most of the athletes the Buccaneers brought back. Quarterback Baker Mayfield and wide receiver Mike Evans did well playing like MVPs but the same can't be said about the Buccaneers pass secondary.

Injuries and poor performances piled up on Whitehead for him to even make some type of impact. The team signed Antoine Winfield Jr. to a recording-breaking extension but he missed seven games including the last four of the regular season. It was a rough patch for Whitehead who was hoping to establish back as a reliable starting safety despite recording 79 total tackles and 12 passes defended in 12 games. Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the former Pittsburgh product left for the Jets to spend two seasons with them but eventually came back to fight for his role back.

Whitehead sustained a car accident which was a key reason why he missed the final two games of the regular season. The Buccaneers will save up about $4.5 million by not exercising the option on his contract. The veteran probably won't have the best market so no one should expect him to sign elsewhere anytime soon but these three teams could say otherwise.

Buccaneers Expected To Move On From Free Agent Jordan Whitehead

3 Possible Destinations

Los Angeles Chargers

Just like Asante Samuel Jr., the Chargers will probably move on from Derwin James this offseason as the secondary unit could look dramatically different. Alohi Gilman's job is in jeopardy as well in the midst of it but he should return for at least one more year despite signing Elijah Molden to an extension. Last year, the team signed Marcus Maye to salvage the unit since losing Gilman for a couple of games.

However, Maye is a free agent and the Chargers probably won't sign him back even though the team has money to burn. Whitehead is no permanent solution but he's capable of being a situational safety as depth since the Chargers will likely sign the top free agent available with their cap space.

Baltimore Ravens

For the Ravens, it's hard to examine how the outlook of the secondary will be. Veteran cornerback Marlon Humphrey is a cap casualty while Ar'Darius Washington could use some backup. Marcus Williams lost his starting job in 2024 in favor of Washington which positively helped Baltimore. Whitehead won't be a permanent backup but he's easily an upgrade from Williams.

Carolina Panthers

Things are shaping up for the Carolina Panthers offense as Bryce Young has a capable pass attack that could finally lead to some wins. However, head coach Dave Canales has yet to address the defense and he didn't make any moves to improve their secondary unit other than adding several practice squad members. Carolina ranked near the bottom on the defensive side of the ball while Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson did what they could to keep the Panthers alive.

However, they need some extra juice no matter who the starting safety will be next season. Free Agent Xavier Woods will probably leave so perhaps, Whitehead could be an adequate replacement for the Panthers secondary. Pairing him with (hopefully) extending Horn should give the team a high-quality competitive unit.

According to the source, Aaron Schultz of ESPN thinks the Buccaneers may make the offseason interesting and release White as the team enters with only 2.2 million in cap space. The team's running back unit is deep and since Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker have been getting more looks, it's easier for Tampa Bay to move on. While White deals with an extortion attempt, the Buccaneers could name Irving and Tucker as their two starting backfield pieces for the immediate future.

Despite that, the rushing attack dramatically improved under Liam Coen as the offensive coordinator but since he's not there, things could change very quickly. In 2023, the former Arizona State product had one of the best seasons as the lead back, recording 1,539 total yards and nine scores over 336 roral touches. However, since his role has been reduced, it might have teased the Buccaneers could be heading in a different direction and Coen joining another NFL team probably puts the icing on the cake for White. The Buccaneers will only save about $3.3 million if they release but they could about every dollar in an attempt to bring back wideout Chris Godwin.

White is still gradually improving and could be a No. 1 running back one day even if it's not with the Buccaneers. However, Bucky Irving will likely emerge as the starter which could make White expendable.

Possible Next 5 Teams

Baltimore Ravens

The team lost their backup Keaton Mitchell for the majority of the 2024 campaign. The Ravens relied on Justice Hill and the team gave him a new extension last year serving as the backup for star running back Derrick Henry. Baltimore did fine without Mitchell but he didn't make much of an impact during his return. While Hill is a dependable back, they could use someone like White if he becomes available as the 1-2 punch behind Henry.

Dallas Cowboys

The main priority other than finding another capable wideout for Dak Prescott would be a running back. There's no word if Rico Dowdle will return but after bringing back Ezekiel Elliott, the plans didn't work out as he wasn't the same player. While they will draft a new running back, they should sign White to give them depth.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the future for Jamaal Williams looks bleak after underperforming with the team in 2024. Alvin Kamara is still as fast as ever after his contract extension but they need more of a reliable backup. Kendre Miller will likely get cut so this means they could sign someone like White to create some competition in the backfield.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers will likely bring back J.K. Dobbins on a new deal but backup Gus Edwards' future does not look promising. He looked more like a journeyman like he did with serving under Dobbins in Baltimore in 2023. Los Angeles should release Edwards and get a more explosive piece in White to be a dependable force in red zone opportunities.

Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City could lose Kareem Hunt after raising his stock last year in time for a competitive free agency. The team doesn't have the financial freedom to burn money to give him an extension. With that, they could sign White to a one-year deal to backup Isiah Pacheco. They can't afford to lose him again in the season but White could easily keep the run game competitive if he goes down again.

However, according to a Bleacher Report, Tampa Bay will do everything in its power to retain one of its key wide receivers in its offense. Originally selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the former Penn State product spent the entirety with the Buccaneers playing an integral role alongside star wideout Mike Evans. After the brutal end to Godwin's season from this past 2024 campaign, it's safe to say the wide receivers will be on the market looking for a "godfather" offer from several teams this offseason as he's one of the top free agents.

Even though he was able to produce some big-time numbers during his time with Tampa Bay, recording consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns following a championship win, there could be some concerns about his health moving forward. After losing offensive coordinator Liam Coen to the Jacksonville Jaguars, it will probably become even more difficult since the new incoming coordinator will likely build a regime for Baker Mayfield's offense. Keeping Godwin in the fold should put the Buccaneers back in for postseason contention but seemingly they did okay without him even though they were a first-round exit in the wild card. With that, the team might have to settle for a capable cheap veteran in the market to pair with Godwin for the offense going forward if they can't retain Godwin.

However, the good news for Godwin is he will have a market and teams like the Ravens, Commanders could offer him a chance on the roster.

Projected $66.7 Million Free Agent Chris Godwin May Join Ravens, Commanders

New Life for Jackson

The Baltimore Ravens failed miserably in the postseason for a second straight season in a row. After releasing Odell Beckham Jr., the team has yet to find the next wide receiver who has the capable footwork to pair behind Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman. However, it hit the Ravens in the worst way this past postseason since losing Flowers to an injury that kept him out of the contest. Isaiah Likely and Mark Andrews had to step up but that didn't do Lamar Jackson justice since the pass game wasn't the same as the matchup against the Bills went close to a shootout.

In this situation in the offseason, the Ravens should be looking for a new wide receiver but considering the salary cap situation, it will become difficult. Perhaps, the team could find a way to sign Godwin on a two-year deal similar to what they did with Derrick Henry last offseason. If the Ravens were able to get the best out of Henry in the running back department, it might be the same scenario for Godwin as long as he stays healthy.

Potential Duo for McLaurin

As for the Commanders, there are new reports that the team will be looking for the new WR2 this free agency. Terry McLaurin finally got the shine this season after being behind an inconsistent quarterback for several years. The team found themselves in the NFC Championship and they're very close to a Super Bowl opportunity if they fill in some weak spots. Noah Brown probably won't come back as he played a temporary role while wide receiver Dyami Brown could resign and move on top of the depth chart as the new No. 3 pass catcher.

However, since Olamide Zaccheaus is a free agent as well, they could sign him back as the No. 4 wideout. With that, the wideout department should be complete with Godwin's presence for Jayden Daniel's offense.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free agent Chris Godwin will probably wave goodbye this offseason as he’s in line to earn a huge contract. After the brutal end to Godwin’s season from this past 2024 campaign, it’s safe to say the wide receivers will be on the market looking for a “godfather” offer from several teams this offseason as he’s one of the top free agents.

Even though he was able to produce some big-time numbers during his time with Tampa Bay, recording consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns following a championship win, there could be some concerns about his health moving forward. After losing offensive coordinator Liam Coen to the Jacksonville Jaguars, it will probably become even more difficult since the new incoming coordinator will likely build a regime for Baker Mayfield’s offense. Keeping Godwin in the fold should put the Buccaneers back in for postseason contention but seemingly they did okay without him even though they were a first-round exit in the wild card. With that, the team might have to settle for a capable cheap veteran in the market to pair with Godwin for the offense going forward if they can’t retain Godwin.

Isaiah Likely and Mark Andrews had to step up but that didn’t do Lamar Jackson justice since the pass game wasn’t the same as the matchup against the Bills went close to a shootout.

Panthers, Buccaneers Connected in Confusing Trade – Ravens, Chargers Seem More Logical Fits https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/02/07/panthers-buccaneers-jadeveon-clowney-trade/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/02/07/panthers-buccaneers-jadeveon-clowney-trade/#respond Fri, 07 Feb 2025 19:30:29 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=215187 Many can speculate that the Panthers, Buccaneers could involve themselves in a confusing Jadeveon Clowney trade. According to a few reports, many believe the Panthers are willing to send Clowney to their divisional round since Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles has the defensive mindset. This is true, but it doesn't seem logical, considering the Panthers are rebuilding their team and they would probably want to keep one of the best pass rushers for at least one more year on his contract. However, the team could probably consider a Clowney but at the right place and price after being the subject of those rumors late in the 2024 campaign.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, the journeyman had a rollercoaster career, earning three Pro Bowl nods across spending time with six teams in his tenure. It seems unusual for Clowney to become a journeyman since he has a lot of talent on his NFL resume, but injuries have been slowing him down in the past until everyone saw his full potential in 2016. However, the veteran was still battling lingering injuries after that year but had a revitalizing season with the Ravens in 2023 which led to the Panthers signing him to a two-year deal last offseason.

Since Clowney is aging, it might be best for the Panthers to find a trade partner so they get something in return or release him so he has the freedom to sign with a contender to win his first Super Bowl ring. Teams like the Ravens, Chargers may provide Clowney the opportunity.

Panthers, Buccaneers Connected in Confusing Jadeveon Clowney Trade - Ravens, Chargers Seem More Logical Fits

Back to Baltimore?

A trade back to the Baltimore Ravens makes sense, considering the landscape of the team's defense. Trenton Simpson didn't show much to intrigue the front office he will be a long-term answer, but bringing back Clowney could provide stability between Simpson and David Ojabo. Rumors are speculating that the Ravens could release Ojabo since he's been a bust draft selection since drafting him in 2022. If that's the case, Baltimore could ship Ojabo and perhaps, Kyle Van Noy in a trade package in return for Clowney.

As much as they probably want to keep Van Noy for one more year, it might be better for the Ravens to bring back Clowney to stabilize the outside end of the pass-rushing unit. It would bring this defense back to life to assist Roquan Smith in getting after the quarterback in crucial third-down possessions.

Cashing out the Chargers

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers almost looked like a complete team this past 2024 campaign but they were unsuccessful due to an inconsistent amount of wide receivers for quarterback Justin Herbert. However, the team is embracing losing several key defensive stars like edge rusher Khalil Mack and cut candidate Joey Bosa. The Chargers should probably sign at least Poona Ford to an extension but they have the funds to facilitate a Clowney trade.

Nobody would get the job done better than Clowney who would be a reliable defender to help achieve Jim Harbaugh's philosophy of winning in the trenches. Clowney is a temporary fit and replacement for Mack while they look for a new linebacker in this year's draft.

He had at least 5 receptions and 50 yards in each of the first seven games of the season. However, Godwin's season was cut short due to a season-ending ankle injury. Godwin is now a free agent this offseason, and there is a rumor that this team could target him.

Chris Godwin Could Be A Target For This Team

Although he is coming off of an ankle injury, Chris Godwin will still be a coveted free agent at wide receiver. One team that could target him is the Las Vegas Raiders. One major reason for this is Godwin's relationship with the now minority owner of the Raiders, Tom Brady. Brady and Godwin won a Super Bowl together and were an incredibly dangerous duo in Tampa Bay.

Godwin's success to date

Chris Godwin has had a great career. He has had four seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards and has had four seasons with at least 80 receptions. With Raiders minority owner Tom Brady, Chris Godwin saw two of the best seasons of his career. In 2021 with Brady, Godwin recorded 98 receptions for 1,103 yards. Still with Brady in 2022, Godwin had 104 catches and 1,023 yards.

Potential fit in Las Vegas

Although the rest of the Las Vegas Raiders team is full of question marks, Chris Godwin would be a nice addition regardless. The Raiders have the number six pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft. This could be used to either draft their quarterback of the future, potentially trade up in the draft, or trade back for more picks. If the Raiders want to take a rookie quarterback, Godwin combined with the emergence of tight end Brock Bowers would give their signal caller two very friendly targets. Bowers had arguably the best rookie tight end season of all time, and that was with lackluster quarterback play from Aidan O'Connell, Gardner Minshew, and Desmond Ridder. Godwin and Bowers could potentially form a top-tier duo in the league.

The Raiders may also decide to pursue a quarterback in free agency. Sam Darnold has been linked to the Raiders a few times during the start of the offseason. Darnold and Chris Godwin could make a great pairing for the Raiders offense. The Raiders could also pursue two Steelers quarterbacks Russell Wilson or Justin Fields. Godwin would make a great target for any of these quarterbacks the Raiders might be interested in.

Other major questions

The Raiders have a lot of questions surrounding their franchise. They still do not have a head coach named for the upcoming season, and they have many holes to fill on their roster. The offensive line frequently got beat last year. The team just named John Spytek the new general manager. It remains to be seen what his vision is for the rest of the coaching staff and roster. However, it is clear that upgrades are needed. The Raiders were only 4-13 on the season, and were consistently uncompetitive. We know Tom Brady will not tolerate that now that he is the minority owner. There should be changes coming to Las Vegas, and adding Godwin to the offense might be one of the changes we see.
